If you would like to join the market and learn how to sell what you grow, we will assist you. We will help you
understand the difference between a home garden and a "market" garden. We'll answer your questions
about growing and selling. If you need advice on any subject having to do with becoming a farmers' market
member, we would be glad to help. There are two Professional Gardeners at the market who are willing
to help you learn. And membership is FREE. You can't beat that.
For instance, for a market garden, by the end of November or the beginning of December,
you should have your old dried up vines/bushes/plants removed and either
destroyed or hauled off to prevent the spread of any diseases you may have had during the past season.
The weeds should be pulled or dug up.
You should also spread any lime now so it has plenty of time to do its job before spring. If you till or plow your
garden area, that also should be done in the fall. If you want to incorporate compost or other organic matter, this
would be the time. However, if you are using manure, you should use Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and
make sure it has been composted for over a year before using it in the garden.
You should decide what you are going to grow, where it will be and how much of it you will need so you can order
it by January. Most plants that you will want to start yourself - IF you start your own - will be done in February
and March so you want them ordered and back before then.
You can start your own plants inside your home if you have a little room and a flourescent light. Contact one of us
for more specifics on this if you would like to know more. It is not that hard but it IS involved in that you
will have to take care of the new plants on a daily basis.
If you would like to become a member of the Barren County Regional Farmers'
Market you can contact
Pat Switzer at: 270-786-4991 (You may have to leave a message)
or you can Email me, which is usually faster.
We invite all Kentucky growers, artisans and craftsmen to become members of the market.
***PLEASE NOTE***
Many of our members do not come to the market. This may be due to the fact that they just do not have the time to grow AND sell produce. Some have outside jobs and cannot do it all. For whatever reason, we have offered to work with these farmers and either sell their produce on consignment or outright buy it from them and resell it. That is why you do not see many vendors at the market but in actuality, there may be as many as 15 or more farmers represented on any given day. This allows us to be able to provide a wide assortment of items as well as giving local farmers the chance to participate in the market on a limited basis. If you would like to have us consider this option with you, please contact us.
